About Nacona

Nacona was found estray and placed with BEHS when her owners were not found. Nacona is a super nice mare to handle on the ground, but her trainer suspected she had been abused under saddle as she was very difficult to ride. Fortunately, her foster home fell in love with her and decided to adopt her as a companion for one of her horses. Nacona's a lucky girl - she won't have to do much other than look pretty and hang out with her pasturemate!

Evaluation and Training

In March 2016, Nacona went to a trainer for an evaluation. Prior to that, she had been ridden in one foster home with no problems - walk, jog, lope, turn, and back. Another foster home had a trainer ride Nacona, and Nacona nearly unseated the trainer. We sent her to a trainer we know and use often for an assessment. The trainer found that Nacona was very easy to work with on the ground. She has good manners, she leads, loads, line drives, and stands for saddling. However, when the trainer rode Nacona in the round pen and arena, Nacona was nervous, light on her front end, and nearly uncontrollable. The trainer felt that Nacona was not safe when ridden in the arena. She thought that it could be due to lack of vision in her eye, and that over time she may adjust and do well. But she also said it is very likely that Nacona was badly abused and associates the arena with that abuse. Because of Nacona's issues, we're we're waiving her adoption fee if she's either adopted as a pet/companion (non-riding horse) or adopted by an experienced rider who is willing to invest the time to retrain her.
