About Keera

Keera was removed from negligent owners and placed with Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society by animal control. Keera hadn't been handled much when she came to Bluebonnet, so she spent time with two trainers to get some halter training. She came away from training with great ground manners and a solid foundation upon which to start her saddle training when she is older. She was adopted by a participant in the 2017 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge. Keera's adopter returned her to the rescue in early 2021 through no fault of her own.

Keera competed under saddle in the professional division of the Spring 2021 Training Challenge where she was adopted. She was returned a few months later when they found she was not a good fit for her adopter.

Keera is a wonderful mare! She gets along well in a herd, she's the top mare at her foster home. Keera likes to move slow and isn't spooky.

Keera was returned again in 2022.

Evaluation and Training

Keera hadn't had much handling before coming to Bluebonnet, so she got a couple of weeks of halter training and groundwork with a trainer when she first arrived. Keera learned to be caught, respect handlers' space, and lead well. She also learned to yield her hindquarters, yield her forequarters, longe and back in hand.

Keera's former adopter had a trainer work with her on the ground, and then she had to return her. Keera went to a professional trainer to be started under saddle for the spring 2021 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge. She was started under saddle, and ridden in an arena, on trails, and over obstacles. Keera had months off with her adopter and then went to a trainer for the Challenge because the adopter had some behavioral problems with her.

Keera’s Training Challenge trainer says she’s a sensitive girl who needs an experienced rider with a soft hand to help bring her along. She’s very smart and will take advantage of a nervous or timid rider, and she’s not a horse for a beginner/novice or child at this time. This mare has amazing potential to do almost anything with the right rider who can bring her along. She’s going to do best if kept in consistent work at this time: she’s not the horse that you can throw out in the pasture and just bring in to ride once every few months. But for the right person? She’s going to be amazing.
