Permanent Identification of BEHS Horses Policy

Policy Number 52

Effective: June 15, 2010
Policy

Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society, Inc.’s (BEHS) policy is to allow adopters of BEHS horses to permanently identify their horses (microchip, tattoo, brand) in accordance with the following procedures.  Unless directed by the Foster Home Coordinator, foster homes may not permanently identify BEHS horses.

Procedure

Adopters of Bluebonnet equines may have their horses permanently identified by one of the following methods:

  • Microchip
  • Tattoo
  • Hot brand
  • Freeze brand

If the adopter has had the equine for more than two years at the time of permanently identifying the equine and received his/her adoption finalizing contract, then he/she will need to submit a copy of the paperwork that accompanies the microchip, tattoo, or brand.  He/she will also need to submit a photograph of the tattoo/brand.

If the adopter has not had the equine for more than two years at the time of permanently identifying the equine and has not received his/her adoption finalizing contract, then he/she will need to list Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society as the owner of the horse and to submit a copy of the paperwork that accompanies the microchip, tattoo, or brand.  He/she will also need to submit a photograph of the tattoo/brand.  The paperwork will then be transferred to the adopter when he/she is sent his/her adoption finalizing contract.

The adopter will be responsible for the cost of permanent identification as well as the cost of transferring registration.
