Support the Horses of Bluebonnet: If you would like to support the horses of Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society but do not want to sponsor the virtual show or compete, you can donate. Donations provide hay, grain, veterinary and farrier care, and training to formerly abused, neglected, abandoned, or unwanted horses so that they can find new, loving homes.  Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax-deductible.

Rules and How to Video:

General  rules and videoing guidelines:
-Please video in landscape mode from approximately 30-40 feet away.
-Keep the horse and exhibitors’ bodies fully in frame at all times, but use the zoom feature so that they can be clearly seen.
-All videos must be one continuous video, with no editing or cutting.
-Videos which do not follow class guidelines or specified pattern will not be disqualified, but cannot be placed above any video which does follow guidelines.
-Only one entry per horse/rider pair per class. (Ex. You may not enter bridleless rail pleasure on the same horse with one English video and one western)
-Use the guidelines and/or pattern which corresponds to your class. If there is more than one option for a class, pick one. (Ex. In Tiny Tot Pattern, you must pick a discipline [western or English] and perform the pattern which matches your chosen tack.)
-You must wear close toed shoes in all classes. Youth and over fences exhibitors must wear helmets (except for during in-hand classes). Other than that, all attire is legal, but keep in mind your presentation will affect your score.
-All tack and equipment (including sidepulls, bitless bridles, and even halters with reins attached) is considered legal, but please refrain from using excessive force or equipment. Disqualification will be at the discretion of judges and show management, but as a general guideline, if you wouldn’t use it in a clinic, don’t use it here.
-All videos should date between April 10 and May 31 and should have some sort of time stamp, whether it is a picture or just a verbal statement of the date. If you have a prior video you would like to use, please contact Sabine Lazo via FB Messenger for approval.

Halter (1-7, 56-57, 65): All halter classes will be judged based on conformation and turnout according to breed standards. Video must show the horse walking towards the camera, then trotting past and turning left at the trot. The horse must then set up and the cameraperson should walk around the horse to show at least 5 seconds of each side as well as front and rear views. If you are using a recording device such as a Pivo, you may turn your horse to display each view.

Color Halter (8-9): Color halter will be judged only on the horse’s color and markings. Confirmation is not a consideration. No tracking is necessary, but videos that do show a walk to and trot away from the judge will not be penalized, so you may reuse your halter videos. Otherwise, simply show 5 seconds of each side of the horse as well as front and rear view.

In-Hand Trail (10-11): Open to horses of ALL ages. Judged on the exhibitor’s work of trail obstacles, performed accurately, precisely, and smoothly. This is not a speed class, but patterns performed with a reasonable amount of speed correctly, should place over patterns that are sluggish (from the OHSA rulebook). In class 10, the prescribed pattern must be followed. In class 11, you may make up your own pattern with whatever obstacles you have available. However, you must submit a picture of your pattern (drawn out) with your entry. All freestyle trail patterns must have 6 obstacles.

Handling Class (12 & 58): Open to horses of ALL ages. This class is meant to showcase the horse’s skills on the ground. Maneuvers should be performed smoothly and without resistance or hesitation from the horse or excessive cues from the handler. This is NOT a showmanship class, but an assessment of a horse’s basic skills on the ground. Must perform the pattern as prescribed.

Showmanship (13-15, 50, 84): Judged on the exhibitor’s work of the posted showmanship pattern, performed accurately, precisely, and smoothly. (OHSA rulebook) Inspection must be performed, but you do not have to have an extra person to serve as the judge- equal credit will be given to an imaginary judge as long as crossovers are performed. Exhibitors in class 15 (walk only) may NOT cross over to any showmanship class which requires a trot. Exhibitors in class 50 must either be in their first year of showing the event or have a horse in its first year of showing the event. Class 84, freestyle shankless showmanship, will not have a prescribed pattern, so a picture of your pattern must be submitted with your entry. All freestyle showmanship patterns must have 6 maneuvers including a walk, a pivot of at least 180 degrees, an inspection, and a back. Horses in class 84 may have a halter, but should not have a leadrope attached to the halter, and exhibitors who touch the halter or their horse will place below any exhibitor who does not.

Western Pleasure Walk Trot (16*, 19, 25, 33*, 51*, 59*, 66*): Based on the quality and consistency of a horse’s gaits. Horses will be judged according to breed standard, but generally speaking, a well-behaved, smooth moving horse will be rewarded. Please show at least 5-10 seconds of the walk and jog each direction, with a stop and back of at least 4 steps at the end.

English Pleasure Walk Trot (16*, 21, 27, 33* 51*, 59*, 66*): Based on the quality and consistency of a horse’s gaits. Horses will be judged according to breed standard, but generally speaking, a well-behaved, smooth moving horse will be rewarded. Please show at least 5-10 seconds of the walk and trot each direction, with a stop and back of at least 4 steps at the end.

Ranch Pleasure Walk Trot (23, 29, 33*, 53*, 59*, 66*): on the quality and consistency of a horse’s gaits. Horses will be judged according to breed standard, but generally speaking, a well-behaved, smooth moving horse will be rewarded. Please show at least 5-10 seconds of the walk, trot, and extended trot each direction, with a stop and back of at least 4 steps at the end.

Pattern Classes (17, 32, 47, 54, 61, 62, 68, 71): This class is similar to horsemanship or equitation, but may be shown either English or western. English versions will call for equitation maneuvers, while western versions will call for horsemanship maneuvers, but patterns will be otherwise identical. This class will be judged on rider’s position and communication with the horse, as well as the team’s ability to complete the prescribed pattern with precision, elegance, and confidence. Scorecards will be based on the APHA judging system (base 70, +/- up to 3 per maneuver)

Western Horsemanship (20, 26, 35, 41): To be judged on rider’s position and communication with the horse, as well as the team’s ability to complete the prescribed pattern with precision, elegance, and confidence. Scorecards will be based on the APHA judging system (base 70, +/- up to 3 per maneuver)

English Equitation (22, 28, 37, 43): To be judged on rider’s position and communication with the horse, as well as the team’s ability to complete the prescribed pattern with precision, elegance, and confidence. Scorecards will be based on the APHA judging system (base 70, +/- up to 3 per maneuver). May be ridden hunt seat or saddle seat.

Trail (18, 31, 46): Judged on the performance of the horse over obstacles with emphasis on manners, responsiveness to the rider, and correctness of obstacle completion. (OHSA rulebook) For freestyle classes, a picture of your pattern must be included with your entry. All patterns must have six maneuvers. Required maneuvers include (1) at least 2 walk overs, (2) at least 2 jog overs, and (3) a back through. Other obstacles are at the exhibitor’s discretion. Lope classes must also have a lope somewhere in the pattern. Scorecards will be based on the APHA judging system

Ranch Riding (24, 30, 39, 45, 55, 63, 64): Judged on horse’s performance of gaits, reflecting the versatility and movement of a working ranch horse while performing the prescribed pattern. Gaits should be correct and exhibit quality of movement. (OHSA Rulebook). Scorecards will be based on the APHA judging system.

Reining (49): Judged on the horse being willfully guided with no resistance to the required pattern. Credit given for smoothness, finesse, attitude, and authority while using speed. entry must perform the prescribed pattern. APHA scorecard system will be used.

Gaited Division classes (69-71): Will be judged the same as the corresponding western pleasure, English pleasure, and pattern classes, but expected gaits will be walk, gait, and third gait of choice (trot or canter) if applicable to the breed.

Crossrails (72): May be exhibited at the trot or canter. Exhibitors MUST wear a helmet. To be judged on horse’s carriage throughout course and rider’s effectiveness. Exhibitors must perform the prescribed course using crossrails instead of jumps.

2’ Basic Hunter Course (73): Exhibitors MUST wear a helmet. To be judged on horse’s carriage throughout the course and rider’s effectiveness. Exhibitors must perform the prescribed course over jumps no less than 21” and no more than 2’3 tall. Please perform the prescribed course.

Hunter Hack (74): Exhibitors MUST wear a helmet. To be judged on horse’s carriage and movement throughout the course and railwork. Exhibitors must jump two jumps of no less than 21” consecutively. Jumps must be set at least 36 feet but no more than 60 feet apart. After the jumps, rider should corner, then stop and back at least four steps. Rider should then exhibit 5-10 seconds of a walk, trot, and canter one way, with a stop at the end. Exhibitors may go over the jumps at a trot or canter, but must canter in the railwork or they will be penalized.

Dressage (75-78): Judged on horse’s performance of gaits. Gaits should be correct and exhibit quality of movement. Entry must perform the prescribed test. (OHSA rulebook)

EWD Classes (87-93): To be judged by the same criteria as the corresponding class above (ex. Western or English pleasure, pattern class, trail), but exhibitors will not be penalized for receiving coaching or assistance during their runs.

Leadline (86): To be judged on rider’s position and communication with the horse. Exhibitors should show at least 5-10 seconds of walking, as well as a stop and back. A trot may be shown and rewarded, but is not required.

Just for Fun classes (79-83): Photos or videos may be submitted. These classes have no date requirements, will only be $2 each, and will be voted on by most reactions (likes, loves, etc.). No high point for this division, but class prizes will apply.
