Volunteering
Are you a horse enthusiast? Would you like to help horses, donkeys and mules find loving, forever homes? Consider volunteering with Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society! We need your help to help the equines who come to us. There are many ways to help – some are hands-on and require horse experience while others give you the chance to learn about horses while helping out. We do require that all volunteers read the CDC information on Zoontoic Disease and once understood, they must become members – so please consider joining today.

Fostering
Foster homes are the heart of the organization. They open their homes and their hearts to house needy equines. Some foster homes help rehabilitate starved equines while others work with equines who have training problems. Foster homes show their equines off to prospective adopters – and when their foster horse is adopted, they open their hearts for another.
Trailering
If you have a truck and trailer and like to drive – we can put you to work! Our horses need rides to new foster homes and from their foster homes to vets, trainers, and events. We make volunteering to trailer easy. Once you become a member of Bluebonnet, we’ll add you to our email list. Then our Trailering Coordinator sends out a message when we need a horse moved. You can volunteer for the trip(s) that work for you – and you can volunteer as often (or as infrequently) as you like. There’s no minimum trips required. When you trailer for Bluebonnet, you can donate your mileage – and we appreciate all donations – or you can get reimbursed for mileage at our current mileage reimbursement rate.

Become a Neglect or Abuse Investigator
These members inspect reports of neglect and abuse. All potential investigators may be required to take and pass a neglect/abuse investigators class. Once you are approved as an Investigator, our Program Coordinator or Neglect/Abuse Coordinator will reach out to you when we have complaints in your area. You can volunteer for as many Investigations as you like. You’ll just locate the horses from the road, take photos, and report back to the rescue. You don’t confront the owner, go on the property (trespass), etc. We get your photos and description of what you saw and then get in touch with local law enforcement or animal control to see how we can help.
Become an Inspector
Inspectors help check out potential adoptive or foster homes. They also help us check up on horses in foster homes and those who have been adopted. Once you join the rescue, we’ll add you to our email list. Our Program Coordinator then sends out an email once or twice a week that lists all the Inspections, or Home Visits, we need done. You can then volunteer for as many as you like. Some folks do just 1-2 per year and some will do several per month. We’re happy for any help! Our Program Coordinator will then let you know how many she needs done, and BEHS provides a form for volunteer inspectors to fill out and a list of required photos. The Program Coordinator will email you and the foster home/adopter to put you in touch. You find a time that works for both of you, set up the visit, and then take the photos and fill out the form. Afterwards, you send them to the Program Coordinator, and she’ll take it from there. If there are any problems or concerns, she addresses those with the foster home or adopter. This is a job even a non-horseperson can do. And it gives you a chance to meet some of the BEHS horses!

Help with Fundraising
BEHS runs off of donations and money brought in at fundraisers – so we are always looking for new members who can help with fundraising. We need new ideas, people to organize fundraisers and people to volunteer at fundraisers. By fundraising, you enable us to bring in and help more equines.
Thank You Committee
Bluebonnet couldn’t operate without our donors, volunteers, and supporters, and we want to make sure they know how much we appreciate them, so we created the Thank You Committee. Committee members send out hand written thank you notes to those who help Bluebonnet, letting them know how much their donation or time means to the horses they help and all of us who love those horses. Once you become a member of Bluebonnet, you can sign up for the committee and then our Administrative Assistant will send you a list of approximately five thank yous to send at a time. You can send thank yous as often as you like, and you can take a break at any time.

Bluebonnet Promotions Team
Reaching new volunteers, supporters, donors, and adopters is important, and our Promotions Team helps us do that! Promotions Team members help spread the word about Bluebonnet through ads, on social media sites, through flyers, listing horses for adoption on websites, and through other creative programs. Once you join Bluebonnet, you can volunteer for this team and our Executive Director and Program Coordinator will help get you started. The team communicates via email and periodic Zoom meetings.
Booths
To help get the word out about Bluebonnet, we hold booths at community events, feed stores and tack stores, horse shows, and other events. At booths, volunteers talk to the public about Bluebonnet’s work, why we need their support, and how they can get more involved. Once you join Bluebonnet, you’ll be added to our email list where you’ll get notices of upcoming booths. Volunteer for any that sound like a good fit, and our Booth Coordinator will get you set up!

Become a Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society Leader
Bluebonnet is mostly run by volunteers, and we always welcome new people who would like to get involved in running the organization. We have openings for program coordinators. These are volunteers who oversee specific areas of the rescue such marketing horses available for adoption, recruiting new foster homes, securing PR and media opportunities for Bluebonnet, and more.
We also need volunteers to serve on the Board of Directors. Bluebonnet’s Directors are responsible for guiding the rescue into the future, upholding the policies and mission of the rescue, insuring we have the funds necessary to operate, and financial and governance oversight.
