Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society Celebrates ASPCA HelpAHorse Day with Month-Long Celebration of the Horse
(Texas: April 2017) – Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society (BEHS) will be celebrating the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) national HelpAHorse Day and competing with rescues across the country for a chance to win up to $25,000 in prizes to assist with their efforts to protect horses. Bluebonnet has rescued over 880 abandoned, abused, and neglected equines since February 2005.
The organization is holding Bluebonnet’s Celebration of the Horse to recognize the rescue’s horses and volunteers during a series of events held throughout April. These events are designs to provide information about the rescue’s work to the public, recruit new volunteers, raise funds to care for the needy horses, and find homes for rehabilitated horses.
The goal of the nationwide Help a Horse Day’s competition is for local rescues to raise awareness about the lifesaving work they do year-round to care for horses in their community who have often been abused or neglected. Horses have been central to the ASPCA’s work since its founding 151 years ago.
Funds raised by Bluebonnet’s Celebration of the Horse will be used locally to help law enforcement agencies in Texas investigate reports of neglect or abuse, remove abused, neglected, and abandoned horses and other equines, and to provide food, medical care, and foster homes to rehabilitate those equines. None of the funds raised at Bluebonnet’s Celebration of the Horse events go to the ASPCA® or other organizations.
“We’ve been so busy this year already,” says Bluebonnet’s Executive Director Dr. Jennifer William. “We’ve taken in over 35 horses and two donkeys and assisted several law enforcement agencies already. And our help has been requested for even more horses. Most of the horses who have arrived are emaciated and require intensive rehabilitation before they’re healthy enough for adoption. The funds and new volunteers raised by our Celebration of the Horse events will help even more needy horses across Texas. I also hope the community will come out to support our events because the more people who attend, the better the chance we have of winning one of the ASPCA’s additional cash prizes.”
Bluebonnet’s Celebration of the Horse events include:
- Informational booths in Alvin, Arcola, Boerne, Brenham, College Station, Liberty Hill, Pearland, Waco (more locations to be added) – throughout April
- Online photo competition for horses, farm animals, and pets – April 1-23
- Ride-A-thon – April 1-23
- Online event with an auction, rescue horse introductions, and more – April 22-23
- Playday, silent auction, and more at Texas Lost Pines Riding Club in Elgin – April 29
- Low-cost equine vaccination clinic in Alvin on April 15 and in LaGrange on April 29
- 25% off of adoption fees for any horse adopted in the month of April.

Every person who signs in at one of the in-person events or clicks ‘Going’ on an online event increases the rescue’s chance of winning the contest and getting additional funds to help rescue horses in Texas from the ASPCA®. Every dollar donated also increases the rescue’s chances of winning and will be used to help starving, abused, abandoned, and stray horses, donkeys, mules, ponies, and miniatures get the help they deserve.
When you attend a Celebration of the Horse event, donate, or volunteer, you help horses like Napoleon. Napoleon came to Bluebonnet from a neglect case as a young horse. Once he was rehabilitated and older, he entered a training competition and was adopted by his trainer. Napoleon and his trainer now trail ride and also compete in hunter/jumper shows – and they’ve amassed quite the collection of ribbons. Napoleon is not only proof of the dedication of Bluebonnet volunteers, but he’s also proof that rescue horses can achieve great things if given the chance.
